Cord blood stem cell transplant is now becoming more and more useful to treat cancer patients. The transplant itself can be done by either using
the patient’s own stem cell or using donor stem cell. The donor stem cell is divided into two. The first one is related matched donor and the second one is unrelated matched donor. For the unrelated matched donor, it is usually taken from the blood bank.
The
cord blood stem cell transplant is collected from the umbilical cord and placenta of a new baby born. The cells for transplantation itself can also be got from other sources, those are marrrow and peripheral. After that the cord blood has to be tested and if it meets the requirements given from the blood bank, it then
be frozen for future use. Tyhe advantage of using the donor stem cell taken from the blood bank is you can make yourself sure that it is safe because the stem cell has already been tested and met the requirements. You, however, should check and find the donor several months before. Sudden donor stem cell will likely be impossible.
